✅ Key Requirements for the D3 Visa

The D3 Visa is a popular choice because it is often processed faster. To qualify, your job must meet these main rules:

  • • Valid Contract: A signed work contract or job promise from a Portuguese employer for at least 1 year.
  • • Highly Qualified: Your role must be specialized (manager, engineer, etc.) and you need the matching degree or experience.
  • • High Salary: Your salary must be significantly higher than the Portuguese national average. (This is usually at least 1.5 times the average national salary).
  • • Estimated Minimum (2025): You will likely need to earn around €1,300 to €2,100 per month or more, depending on the exact calculation.

Step-by-Step Application Process

The process is generally done in two main phases:
Phase 1: The Work Permit & Visa (In Your Home Country)

  • 1. Employer Starts: Your Portuguese employer must first apply for authorization (a "Work Permit") on your behalf with the Portuguese Labour Authorities.
  • 2. You Apply for the Visa: Once the authorization is approved, you apply for the D3 Residence Visa at the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate in your home country (or through their official partner, like VFS Global).
  • 3. Submission: You submit the completed form and all necessary documents.
  • 4. Wait for Approval: The Consulate processes the visa. This usually takes 1 to 2 months for D3 visas.
  • 5. Enter Portugal: When approved, you receive a temporary visa (valid for 4 months) that allows you to travel to Portugal.
  • Phase 2: The Residence Permit (After You Arrive in Portugal)

  • 6. Book Appointment: You must book an appointment with the Portuguese immigration service (AIMA – the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, formerly SEF) within your first four months in Portugal.
  • 7. Formal Application: At the AIMA appointment, you give your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and apply for the long-term Residence Permit (which is valid for 2 years and is renewable).

Documents You Need to Prepare

  • • Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least three months longer than your intended stay.
  • • Signed Work Contract: The legal contract from your Portuguese employer.
  • • Proof of Qualifications: Your diplomas, degrees, or professional certificates.
  • • Proof of Accommodation: Where you will live in Portugal (rental contract or official booking).
  • • Clean Criminal Record: A police clearance certificate from your home country (often needs a special stamp called an Apostille).
  • • Health Insurance: Travel and health insurance that covers you for your initial stay.
  • • Proof of Funds: Bank statements showing you can support yourself until you get paid.
