An eligible sponsor generally must be at least 18 years old and be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or another eligible person under Canadian immigration law. Additional requirements apply.
A dependent child generally means a child who is under 22 years old and does not have a spouse or common-law partner. Certain children aged 22 or older may qualify if they meet the applicable dependency requirements due to a physical or mental condition.
In certain circumstances, a spouse or partner being sponsored for permanent residence may be eligible for an open work permit, subject to the applicable requirements. A sponsorship application itself does not automatically provide work rights.
Canada has a separate Parents and Grandparents sponsorship pathway. It has different eligibility, invitation and financial requirements from spouse, partner and dependent child sponsorship.
Documents depend on the sponsorship category. They may include passports, marriage or relationship evidence, birth certificates, sponsor status documents, financial documents where applicable, police certificates, medical documents and other forms requested by IRCC.
Processing time varies by sponsorship category, application type and individual circumstances. Applicants should check the latest IRCC processing information for their specific application.
