New Zealand has announced important changes to the Parent Resident Visa process. The new system will start from 5 October 2026.
The New Zealand Parent Resident Visa allows eligible New Zealand citizens and residents to sponsor their parents to live in New Zealand.
What Is Changing?
From 5 October 2026, Immigration New Zealand will use a new hybrid selection system for Parent Resident Visa Expressions of Interest (EOIs).
Under the new system:
- Around 90% of EOIs will be selected based on the date they were submitted.
- Around 10% of EOIs will be selected through a ballot.
- The yearly limit will remain at 2,500 Parent Resident Visas.
- Existing EOI holders will automatically move to the new system.
- Applicants will not need to submit a new EOI.
This new system is expected to make the New Zealand Parent Visa selection process more predictable while still giving new applicants a chance to be selected.
Important Dates for New Zealand Parent Visa
There are three important dates to remember:
From 11 August 2026 – The next selection will take place under the current system.
From 5 October 2026 – The new hybrid EOI selection system will begin.
From 10 November 2026 – The first selection under the new system is expected to take place.
What Happens to Existing EOIs?
If you already have an EOI in the New Zealand Parent Resident Visa pool, you do not need to submit a new one.
Applicants who have continuously maintained their EOI will generally keep their position based on the date their original EOI was accepted.
Immigration New Zealand will provide more information about queue positions after the new system starts.
Question – Will Parent Visa EOIs Expire?
Answer – Under the current system, an EOI normally expires after two years if it is not selected.
Under the new system, EOIs will not automatically expire after two years.
However, applicants will need to confirm every two years that they still want to remain in the EOI pool. They must also keep their information updated.
There will be no extra fee for this confirmation.
Question – Are the Parent Resident Visa Requirements Changing?
Answer – No. The main New Zealand Parent Resident Visa requirements are not changing.
The changes only affect how EOIs are selected for an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
The Parent Resident Visa is still a two-step process:
- Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI).
- If selected and eligible, receive an Invitation to Apply and submit the residence application.
Question – How Many Parent Visas Are Available?
Answer – New Zealand can approve up to 2,500 Parent Resident Visas each financial year.
There are more applicants than available places, so some families may still have to wait before their EOI is selected.
What Does This Mean for Parents?
The new system may make the New Zealand Parent Visa selection process easier to understand.
Around 90% of applicants will be selected based on their position in the queue, while around 10% will have a chance through the ballot.
However, being selected does not automatically mean the visa will be approved. Applicants and sponsors must still meet all the required Parent Resident Visa eligibility requirements.
