Interview Waiver Update

The U.S. Department of State has updated the rules for who can skip an in-person visa interview. Consular officers can choose to waive the interview for certain applicants based on the following categories from U.S. law:

1. Applicants under specific visa types like A-1, A-2, C-3 (except for some workers), G-1 to G-4, NATO-1 to NATO-6, or TECRO E-1.
2. Applicants applying for diplomatic or official visas.
3. Applicants who had the same type of visa before, which expired less than 12 months ago.

To be eligible for an interview waiver, applicants must meet these conditions:

– Apply in their country of citizenship or residence.
– Have never had a visa refusal (unless it was waived or fixed).
– Have no visible issues or reasons they would be ineligible.

Even with these rules, consular officers may still ask for an in-person interview in certain cases or due to local conditions. It’s important for applicants to check the embassy or consulate websites for updates and detailed instructions.

This update replaces the previous one from December 21, 2023.
