What is a Germany Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)?
A Germany Blocked Account (also known as a Sperrkonto) is a special type of bank account required by international students, job seekers, and some visa applicants who want to stay in Germany. It is meant to prove that you have enough financial resources to support yourself during your stay.
What is a Blocked Account?
A Blocked Account is a restricted account in which you deposit a specific amount of money that you can’t fully access all at once. Instead, you can only withdraw a fixed monthly amount.
Why is it Required?
The German government wants to ensure that you won’t face financial difficulties during your stay and that you won’t depend on public funds. It’s a mandatory requirement for certain visa categories such as:
- Student visa
- Job seeker visa
Minimum Amount Required (As of 2025)
The required blocked amount is: €11,208 per year (which is €934 per month) . This amount is based on the minimum cost of living for a foreigner in Germany.
Required Documents to Open a Blocked Account
- Valid passport
- Visa application or admission letter (if student)
- Proof of source of funds (in some cases)
- Completed blocked account application form
Key Points to Remember
- You can’t use the blocked account funds for visa processing or flights.
- Once your visa is rejected, you can usually close the account and get a refund.
- You must activate the account once you arrive in Germany to start receiving monthly pay outs.
